From Seattle to San Francisco, Boston to Brooklyn and many points beyond they hail. Borussia Dortmund estimate they have more than 40 different fan groups scattered across the USA and that number could well be set to expand after some thrilling showings on their march to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup™.

Either side of tight group outings with Fluminense FC and Ulsan HD, the German giants were involved in a seven-goal thriller with Mamelodi Sundowns that helped them reach the knockout stage. There, it was the Karim Adeyemi and Serhou Guirassy show as that pair combined for both goals in a 2-1 win over CF Monterrey in the Round of 16.

Next up is a final eight showdown with fellow European power Real Madrid C.F. in New York New Jersey on 5 July with a berth in the Club World Cup semi-finals on the line.

Group Stage (Group F)

Fluminense FC 0-0 Borussia Dortmund

There was little hint of the attacking flourish that was later to shine through as Niko Kovac's men played out a scoreless stalemate with Fluminense at MetLife Stadium. Dortmund's Gregor Kobel was the busier of the two keepers, making a fine double save in the second half to help his side make a positive start.

Mamelodi Sundowns 3-4 Borussia Dortmund

The shackles were well and truly off as the team shifted to Cincinnati, where Dortmund raced into a 3-1 lead at the break courtesy of goals from Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy and Jobe Bellingham. An own goal just shy of the hour extended the advantage although they had to hold off a furious late Sundowns surge to bank maximum points and join Fluminense at the head of the section standings.

Borussia Dortmund 1-0 Ulsan HD

The team headed into the final fixture against an already eliminated Ulsan HD outfit knowing that a win would secure their passage to the knockout stage. Defender Daniel Svensson ensured that was how things played out as he lashed home a left-footed rocket in the 36th minute, although the scoreline could have been even greater if not for a string of saves by Jo Hyeonwoo to deny Guirassy and Co.

Round of 16

Borussia Dortmund 2-1 CF Monterrey

Playing at their third venue in four matches, Dortmund raced out of the blocks at the 'Benz in Atlanta to take a 2-0 lead inside the first 24 minutes. Both goals were laid on by the electric pace of Karim Adeyemi and finished with typical surgical precision by Guinea international Guirassy. Monterrey pegged a goal back early in the second term to set up a tense finish but there was also the sense that Dortmund were in control of things. The 2-1 result setting up that blockbuster last eight showdown with fellow UEFA outfit Real Madrid.
