Botafogo and Seattle Sounders will round out the first slate of matches in Group B with an enticing duel at Lumen Field in Seattle. Brazilian champions Botafogo secured their place at the FIFA Club World Cup by winning the 2024 edition of the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores when they defeated Atletico Mineiro 3-1 despite playing a man down for almost the entire game. The Sounders, meanwhile, earned their place by defeating Mexican side Pumas in the 2022 Concacaf Champions Cup final, claiming one of Concacaf’s four allocated berths. They fought back from a 2-0 deficit to claim a 2-2 draw in the first leg in Mexico, before securing a 3-0 victory in the second leg and a 5-2 win on aggregate.
The Sounders will be without Yeimar, their top defender who is out for at least a month with a calf injury. Jordan Morris, the club's all-time leading goal scorer, also could miss the opening match due to a hamstring injury.
"In group play, it's really important, when you're playing against really good competition, to have a good first game. It kind of sets you up for the entire tournament, and it doesn't feel like you're trying to catch up with the rest of the group. So, the first game is extremely important, and I think that's our mentality going into group play. Take it game by game, but intensity and mentality in group play is always the starting point."
Seattle midfielder Cristian Roldan
"I really believe in the power of words, of believing in what you say. I'm that guy. I like to motivate my team-mates. You can't not be motivated when you leave your home and family to come and play in the Club World Cup. It's the biggest motivation of all: to wear the Botafogo shirt and to play against the greatest teams."
Botafogo midfielder Marlon Freitas
