Cano: Scoring goals, it's what I love doing

FIFA
  • Veteran Argentine talks about adjusting his diet
  • Cano remains hungry for goals at 37
  • Fluminense face Ulsan and Mamelodi Sundowns in their remaining group matches

Fluminense FC striker German Cano says he has officially upgraded to version 3.7 (a reference to his age), arriving at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ stronger and better than ever. The 37-year-old is fresh off recovery from a right knee injury sustained in April. Flu’s top scorer made successful return to the side coming off the bench to play 25 minutes in their FIFA Club World Cup 2025 opener against Borussia Dortmund. He’s already hungry for more.

In truth, he wants to show the world what he does best.

“Scoring goals. It’s what I love doing. I love helping the team out by hitting the net. This year, I’ve approached things differently. I’ve been pushing myself however I can, both on and off the pitch. I’ve been training better, eating more healthily, doing everything I can to be at the right level to handle the step up in intensity,” he told FIFA.

In an interview with Globo, Cano revealed how he’s recently changed his diet to include more vegetables and greens, while maintaining a balanced intake of carbs and protein, all with the support of a team of nutritionists and chefs.

“Yes, I’m definitely stronger and I’ve started doing things I never used to. The biggest change has been my diet. I’ve been eating better and incorporated a lot of things that are good for me that I never ate before. It’s helped my injury heal as quickly as possible. I’ve had a great team around me this past month helping me get stronger and back to full fitness. I’m grateful to all of them,” said the Argentinian, who has 14 goals to his name this year.

There’s been a good reason behind all that hard work. Now 37, Cano knows he doesn’t have time to waste. With the FIFA Club World Cup now held every four years, there’s no guarantee he or Fluminense will get another shot.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, something that only comes around every four years. For me personally, this tournament is really special because I don’t know if I’ll ever get to play in another Club World Cup,” he told Globo, ahead of his side’s goalless draw with Borussia Dortmund.

While the match ended goalless, Fluminense were able to take away a lot of positives, with much of the praise focused on the Brazilian side’s attitude and approach towards their German opponents. The Tricolor created more chances than Dortmund and kept the pressure on, showing no fear in the face of European opposition. The result meant all four Brazilian clubs ended their first Club World Cup matches unbeaten.

Next up is a clash with Korea Republic side Ulsan HD on Saturday at 18:00 local time, before they round out the group stage against the South African side Mamelodi Sundowns next Wednesday. Cano insists that Fluminense aren’t underestimating anyone.

“Well, every team we’re up against is going to be tough. We approach each match individually and we know the teams in our group are all very strong. Of course, we’re looking to do well. This means a lot to us, and we’re going to do everything we can to keep our Club World Cup journey alive,” he told FIFA. “Our main goal, first and foremost, is to compete. We’re working hard to give it everything we’ve got, make it out of the group, and prove ourselves against the best in the world.”
