Chelsea team guide

Location

Chelsea are one of 17 professional clubs that play in London, seven of which are in the Premier League.

Stamford Bridge is to the west of the city in the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

Origin

In 1904, Gus Mears acquired the Stamford Bridge athletics stadium in Fulham with the aim of turning it into a football ground. An offer to lease it to nearby Fulham was turned down, so Mears opted to found his own club to use the stadium. As there was already a team named Fulham in the borough, the name of the adjacent borough of Chelsea was chosen for the new club.

Chelsea were a fashionable club in the swinging sixties before a plethora of top continental names joined them in the 1990s. Modern day greats include stalwarts John Terry and Frank Lampard.

Top scorer (Premier League 24/25) - Cole Palmer (15 goals)

With a swagger that you can’t help but behold, Cole Palmer seems to make football look so easy.

The cool, calm forward is once again the Blues’ key man and most prolific goal-getter in 2025.

Manager - Enzo Maresca (ITA)

A disciple of Pep Guardiola and part of his coaching staff during Manchester City's treble-winning season, Maresca took over at Chelsea at the start of the season following his first management job with Leicester City.

He led the Foxes to promotion from the Championship before moving to Stamford Bridge, where he's taken time to create his own identity on Chelsea's bloated squad.

How Chelsea qualified for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

Chelsea are one of twelve European teams competing in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and qualify as one of the last three winners of the UEFA Champions League.

The Blues were victorious in the 2021 showpiece, during the Covid-19 pandemic, when they overcame Manchester City.
