The match

A fascinating showdown awaits as English Premier League giants Chelsea take on an LAFC side which also boasts significant star power. The likes of Cole Palmer, Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez will go head-to-head with Hugo Lloris, Olivier Giroud and Denis Bouanga in Atlanta. Can LAFC, still on a high following their dramatic Play-In victory, cause an upset against the Blues?

Team news

Chelsea will be without defender Wesley Fofana, who was left out of their Club World Cup squad to continue his recovery from hamstring surgery. New signings Liam Delap, Dario Essugo, Mamadou Sarr and Mike Penders could make their debuts.

LAFC have a full squad to choose from. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, coach Steve Cherundulo said: “Everybody’s healthy. We don’t even have a slight cold. Everybody wants to be a part of it. “

What they said...

“This is a game where if we are not ready, we are not prepared, then we can be in trouble. We need to be 100 per cent. When you are a Chelsea player or a Chelsea manager, then you need to win games. Hopefully we can start this competition by winning our game.”
Enzo Maresca, Chelsea coach

“We have to try to be as solid as possible. It’s important we take care of the ball and we don’t lose easy balls. We have to keep the focus high. We want to make the game as hard as possible for Chelsea. We have nothing to lose. It’s a great opportunity for us to compete against this type of club.”
Hugo Lloris, LAFC goalkeeper
