Teenage sensation Desire Doue scored two and created one as Paris Saint-Germain claimed their first UEFA Champions League crown with an astonishing 5-0 triumph over FC Internazionale Milano.
Victory at FC Bayern München’s Allianz Arena means that Luis Enrique’s men have now qualified for both the FIFA Intercontinental Cup 2025™ and the FIFA Club World Cup 2029™.
The French club will now make the trip to the USA for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ with another major piece of silverware added to their trophy cabinet following a domestic double and looking to add another in the coming global showpiece, with Inter also among the 32 teams who will feature.
PSG dominated the early possession in Bavaria and carved the Italian defence open to take the lead with only 12 minutes on the clock as Vitinha picked out Doue – who was being played onside by the too-deep Federico Dimarco – allowing the 19-year-old to square for Achraf Hakimi to side-foot home.
The Morocco international, who spent a successful season with Inter and helped them to the Serie A crown in 2020/21, elected not to celebrate in front of the Italian supporters, but his simple finish sparked jubilation at the opposite end of the stadium.
Soon after it was 2-0, with a lightning counter-attack culminating in a cross-field ball from Ousmane Dembele to pick out Doue on the right of the penalty area, with his driven strike deflecting off the unfortunate Dimarco to leave Yann Sommer with no chance.
The game was effectively sealed shortly after the hour-mark as a neat Dembele roll-back into the path of Vitinha sent the midfielder racing into Inter territory where he played a slide-rule pass for Doue to finish first time beyond Sommer.
He left the field to a standing ovation soon after, but there was no let-up from a relentless PSG, with Dembele releasing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to burst into acres of space in the Inter half before beating an exposed Sommer with a left-foot finish, before substitutes Bradley Barcola and Senny Mayulu combined for the latter to drill home in the 86th minute.
Surprisingly, given their respective European pedigrees, this was the first competitive meeting between the two teams, with the potential for a second in the coming weeks as they head to the USA for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
PSG will play Atlético de Madrid and Botafogo in Los Angeles, before squaring off against Seattle Sounders FC in Seattle in their final Group B game.
Inter will kick off their campaign against CF Monterrey in Los Angeles, before flying to Seattle for their remaining Group E matches against Urawa Red Diamonds and CA River Plate.
And later this year, PSG will be one of the teams who will take part in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup, joining AFC qualifiers Al Ahli of Saudi Arabia and OFC representatives, Auckland City.
"I don't have the words! Thank you, Paris! We did it, we wrote history! It's incredible, thank you so much. It's a dream come true, thank you to the whole team, thank you to all the players. It's just amazing, it's crazy. I'm so happy!"
Desire Doue - Paris Saint-Germain player, speaking to Canal+
"I love you, I have no more strength, I gave everything. I wanted this so badly, we suffered. It [the Champions League] is tough; it’s very difficult to win, and it shows the values of this club, the desire they have. To you guys, those who are here, those at the Parc des Princes, those all around the world, thank you so much! Your energy gave us what we achieved today!"
Marquinhos - Paris Saint-Germain, speaking to Canal+
"We have to congratulate Paris Saint-Germain because they were stronger in every aspect: tactically, in determination and everything else. They wanted it more, and so they deserve the credit. There’s a lot of regret because the image that remains somewhat erases the great journey we've had."
Nicolo Barella - Internazionale, speaking to Sky Sport
"It was a disappointing evening, where the opponent outclassed us in every aspect, so the defeat is clearly deserved, regardless of the scoreline. However, this should in no way overshadow what has been a great season, even if we consider only our Champions League journey. We played against a very strong team and we regret this performance. I also want to thank the many fans who supported us and came all the way here."
Giuseppe Marotta - Internazionale president, speaking to Sky Sport
