Estevao aims to outshine Chelsea's Brazilian superstars

FIFA
  • Estevao has been officially unveiled as a Chelsea player
  • Premier League club have a long history of Brazilian stars
  • “I want to be the best in the world,” the 18-year-old declares

Walking through the corridors of his new club’s training ground on the outskirts of London, Estevao is immersed in the memories of Chelsea’s most-celebrated triumphs. He recalls witnessing some of those iconic moments from afar, watching on television in Brazil – from their UEFA Champions League titles in 2012 and 2021 to any of their five English Premier League crowns since the turn of the century.

When they clinched the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ crown last month, the Blues added to their glittering trophy cabinet and put the final jewel in their collection of major honours. Silverware aside, one detail sure to catch the eye of Chelsea’s latest recruit is the enduring legacy of Brazilian brilliance that has dazzled on the Stamford Bridge turf.

“It’s a pleasure to be here, where so many Brazilians have made history,” said Estevao in an interview for the club’s website. “I hope to follow in the footsteps of those who’ve left such a lasting mark here.”

After an agreement had been reached between Palmeiras and Estevao’s Premier League suitors, Brazilian icon and former Blues defender Thiago Silva helped cement the young prodigy’s decision to make the move to West London. The moment unfolded when their sides locked horns in the final game of the Brazilian top-flight campaign in 2024, when Silva’s Fluminense sealed a 1-0 away victory over the Sao Paulo giants.

After the final whistle, the defensive linchpin who won both the UEFA Champions League and what is now known as the FIFA Intercontinental Cup™ with Chelsea in 2021 shared some pearls of wisdom with the emerging talent.

“He said I would love the club, which has a fantastic structure and an incredible set-up. And now that I’m here, I can see how amazing it is," Estevao added.

Chelsea fans are no strangers to seeing Brazilians lift trophies for their club with David Luiz, Willian and Ramires just a few examples of the 11 players to have done so. The latest names to have joined that growing list are Andrey Santos and Joao Pedro, who were part of the squad that went all the way at the recent global club showpiece in the United States.

Estevao experienced a somewhat bittersweet moment in what would turn out to be his last outing for the Alviverde. With his move to Europe already confirmed, his Palmeiras side were pitted against his future employers in the quarter-finals of FIFA’s new flagship club competition, and his equaliser in that contest would prove to be his only goal at the tournament and his last for the Verdao.

That brought the curtain down on his 83-game spell with Brazil’s most decorated side, which saw him score 27 goals and provide 15 assists, as well as win the Brazilian Serie A title in 2023 and the Campeonato Paulista in 2024.

Whilst fully aware of the long line of Brazilians before him, that was not the primary factor in Estevao opting to join Chelsea. Interest poured in from across Europe for the teenage sensation, but it was the Blues that offered him everything he sought to kick-start his career on the continent.

“It was a dream for me and my family [for me to move to a big European club], and now I can fulfil that dream,” he said. “Their plans, the structure and the club. Everything. But it was mainly the club’s plans and the project that appealed to me and my family, and I think it was the best decision we could have made.”

Estevao’s reference to “the project” is likely alluding to Chelsea’s youthful squad. Having invested heavily in young talent from around the globe in recent years, the Londoners boast an exciting crop of players with their best years still ahead of them.

Enzo Maresca’s starting XI in the tournament showpiece on US soil had an average age of just 24.2 years. Only three members of the starting line-up were over the age of 25: goalkeeper Robert Sanchez (27) and defenders Trevoh Chalobah (26) and Marc Cucurella (26).

“I’m really, really excited,” he added. “It’s a new experience and a new stage in my life. I’m looking forward to it and hope that everything goes as well as it can do.”

Still just 18 years of age, Estevao has big plans for the future as he sets his sights on reaching the pinnacle of the game. Chelsea fans might well be accustomed to seeing Brazilians shine on the Stamford Bridge stage, but this particular left-footed magician is far from content with the idea of merely joining that legacy – he is determined to be the best of them all.

“I want to win all the titles possible: the Premier League and the Champions League as well. And personally, to be the best in the world and keep working hard so that these dreams come true.”
