Fantasy Focus: Key quarter-final transfer targets

FIFA

Just seven matches remain on both the actual and virtual pitch, with the FIFA Club World Cup™ fantasy game set for a thrilling finale.

With four free transfers available plus the option of using various Boosters for those yet to deploy them, there are plenty of choices for fantasy managers to make.

Although the budget remains unchanged at $105m for the remainder of the tournament there has been a change in the number of players able to be owned per club, with that now at five.

As the quarter-finals showed it’s important to try and balance your 15-strong squad to keep active numbers going forward. With that in mind, FIFA firstly recaps the available Boosters that could be in play for many teams before offering some key transfer targets prior to the game once again locking ahead of the first last eight showdown between Fluminense FC and Al Hilal.

Booster overview

Wildcard

Will allow you to make unlimited transfers within a specific round.

12th Man

Will allow you to select one additional player to score points for your team in a matchday. When selected, the 12th man cannot be substituted, captained or transferred. You can select any player to be your twelfth man, as long as that player is not already part of your squad. Budget or team restrictions do not count here.

Maximum Captain

Will allow you to get double points from whichever player scores the most points from your starting XI. This player will automatically be assigned the captaincy.

Qualification Booster

The mystery option was revealed to be a Qualification Booster. That rewards any player whose club advances to the following stage with an additional two points. Naturally, it can now only be deployed in either the quarter-finals or the semi-finals.

Fabio ($4.6m) GK | Fluminense FC | Next opponent: Al Hilal
Fluminense's experienced goalkeeper has kept a clean sheet in three of his four appearances at the Club World Cup, notching up double figure returns in each of those fixtures. The Brazilian side faces a tough task in Al Hilal, but Fabio has already shown his quality remains intact, even at an advanced age. Fantasy managers who perhaps fancy Al Hilal to progress instead could pivot to Blues keeper Yassine Bounou ($5.0m) with the Moroccan turning in a string of fine displays so far.

Kalidou Koulibaly ($4.8m) | DEF | Al Hilal | Next opponent: Fluminense FC
Al Hilal's upset, Round of 16 victory against Manchester City was also a boon for Koulibaly, with the Senegalese defender returning nine points, despite conceding three goals. That came largely via a goal and the scouting bonus but it's worth remembering that during the group stage the Blues only conceded a single goal. Only two other available defenders have scored more points than the 34-year-old so far, making him an exciting option in the quarter-finals.

Ruben Neves ($6.3m) | MID | Al Hilal | Next opponent: Fluminense FC
Koulibaly's teammate Ruben Neves has also come into focus recently. The Portuguese midfielder-turned-defender contributed an assist in the Round of 16 and also secured the scouting bonus. His comparatively low price therefore gives him real appeal, as does the possibility that he is also on penalty duties for the Saudi giants.

Pedro Neto ($6.5m) | MID | Chelsea FC | Next opponent: Palmeiras
The Chelsea forward has starred stateside, scoring in each of his three appearances at the Club World Cup so far. He will be looking to extend that run against Palmeiras to help Chelsea into the semi-finals. With a price tag of just $6.5m, he is also a cost-effective fantasy option that has already paid several dividends and also a cheaper alternative to fellow Chelsea midfielder star Cole Palmer ($9.6m).

Gonzalo Garcia ($5.1m) | FWD | Real Madrid C.F. | Next opponent: FC Bayern Munich
The Spanish starlet has been one of the discoveries of the Club World Cup – and his coach Xabi Alonso has shown real faith in the academy product so far. A fit again Kylian Mbappe certainly clouds things but after Garcia's strong performances, he could start ahead of the French superstar if not fully up to match speed, or possibly play alongside him. In any case, his low price makes him a good option with relatively low risk.
