Canada vs. Qatar preview: Team news and how to watch World Cup match

It's the second matchday of the 2026 FIFA World Cup for Canada, and the stakes have risen ahead of their match against Qatar in Vancouver on Thursday.

The Canadians battled a nervy start and a robust Bosnia-Herzegovina defence to earn a 1-1 draw in their opener in Toronto last week, resulting in their first-ever point earned in this tournament. The next day, Qatar shocked Switzerland with a late equalizer in a game that also ended 1-1, throwing Group B into disarray as all four teams are tied on a point apiece after the first match.

That means Canada could take over the top spot in the group with a victory on Thursday, but it also adds pressure to earn a win with all of the group's teams still on level terms.

As for the Qataris, their stunning draw also represented their first-ever World Cup point, and they look to continue to shake up Group B with another upset — this time against the tournament co-hosts.

Jesse Marsch threw a curveball in the opening match by leaving Cyle Larin on the bench, with Tani Oluwaseyi replacing him in the starting XI. Larin then went on to score the equalizer as a second-half substitute, and that may be enough to win his starting job back.

Additionally, Ali Ahmed's stellar 30-minute cameo against the Bosnians could see him grab a starting spot vs. Qatar.
