One thing England must prepare for ahead of their Round of 16 match on Sunday is the possibility of a penalty shootout.

It's been a narrative around exits from competitions for England ever since their first taste of heartbreak at Italia '90, but they have also experienced what it's like to win a World Cup shootout.

Eight years ago today, England faced Colombia at the 2018 tournament, and with the game locked in at 1-1 after extra time, the tie needed spot kicks to decide a winner.

The ghosts of tournaments past could have then reared their heads, but this was Gareth Southgate's England. A man who tasted the despair of penalty woe at Euro '96 and had his troops ready to finally ready to end the World Cup curse from 12 yards.

However, it was England who blinked first. With four penalties scored, Jordan Henderson missed his to put the South Americans in the driving seat.

It was an advantage they couldn't take; Mateus Uribe and Carlos Bacca then missed for Colombia, leaving Eric Dier to make history by scoring the spot kick that gave England a first-ever victory in a World Cup penalty lottery.
