South American royalty and African luminaries clash on the first day of Group D action as Flamengo and Espérance get set for a Philadelphia rumble. The Brazilian giants booked their place at the Club World Cup by virtue of having won the 2022 edition of the Copa Libertadores, while Espérance qualified via the ranking pathway following consistently impressive showings over the four-year cycle from 2020/2021 to 2024. This will be the first competitive clash between the pair whose home cities of Rio de Janeiro and Tunis share a sister-city arrangement.
Flamengo added reinforcements to their midfield with the addition of Jorginho, the former Napoli, Chelsea and Arsenal player.
"Facing African teams is always a challenge; they have great technique. I think some opponents are underestimated. Our match against Espérance will be particularly difficult, but we intend to take full advantage of every match."
Flamengo sporting director Jose Boto
"Flamengo have top-class players right across the board, not just at the back. We’ve also got a squad brimming with talent. I’m expecting an open match, in which Flamengo will try to play on the front foot. When a team set out to attack, they leave gaps in behind, which we’ll look to exploit. Anything can happen in football. There are upsets and shock results every day."
Espérance forward Rodrigo Rodrigues

It is perhaps fitting that the first ticketed event at Lincoln Financial Field was the eye-catching friendly between European rivals Barcelona and Manchester United in August 2003, with Patrick Kluivert having the honour of scoring the venue’s first goal. Now home to NFL side Philadelphia Eagles, the impressive arena has also been selected to host five group-stage matches and a Round of 16 tie during the eagerly anticipated 48-team FIFA World Cup 26™.
