Manchester City could get an attacking boost for their third-round Carabao Cup match against Norwich City on Thursday, as Jeremy Doku is nearing a return to action.
Doku played 45 minutes of City's 3-0 loss to Arsenal in the FA Community Shield last month before being subbed out with a calf injury, and the Belgian has missed every match since then. However, Enzo Maresca provided a brief update on the 24-year-old's status without actually committing to using Doku against the Canaries.
"He is very close," Maresca said on Wednesday.
The Sky Blues have played five games since that season-opening defeat — all victories — but they would still welcome Doku with open arms, especially given the suspension imposed on fellow wide attacker Phil Foden.
Foden was shown a red card for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes in City's 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday, and he will now miss the next three matches as a result.
“For us it is a big [blow],” City's manager said.
“Phil started well for us and did good in the minutes he was on the pitch on Sunday but he is out tomorrow, then Sunderland and then Liverpool - then he’s back with us.”
