Los Angeles Football Club kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 loss against Chelsea FC in Atlanta. Espérance also suffered a 2-0 defeat in their opener against CR Flamengo in Philadelphia.
LAFC have only one player unavailable for their second match. Winger Nathan Ordaz will miss the game after taking a knock to the head against Chelsea.
Defender Yassine Meriah, who had been working his way back from a knee injury, made a surprise start for Espérance against Flamengo. He played 90 minutes and figures to remain in the lineup.
"Has to be a win [against Espérance]. There’s no other mindset for us. It’s everything. We’ve got to get three points out of the next game and see what we need to do in the third game to move on."
Ryan Hollingshead, LAFC full-back
“The loss to Flamengo wasn’t a surprise. Despite the result, I’m satisfied with the spirit and character shown by the players. We struggled in the first half but improved significantly after the break."
Maher Kanzari, Espérance head coach
“Now that results have gone either for or against certain teams, you might see different approaches. Domestic leagues, most of the clubs going through this tournament, are the ones who are dominant. And that is not the case here, obviously. So sometimes it’s adjusting to a different style of play or a different match plan that you’re normally used to. For us, it’s more of the same. But for certain teams, and our [next] opponent, they’re certainly more used to having possession in the domestic league. And the team is drilled that way, which obviously wasn’t the case against Flamengo and hopefully isn’t the case [on Friday].”
Steve Cherundolo, LAFC head coach
