'It wasn't the game for pretty football' — Two-goal hero Morgan Rogers hails Aston Villa's resilience in Leeds victory

Not every match has to be a masterpiece.

Aston Villa fought back from an early deficit to defeat hosts Leeds 2-1 at Elland Road on Sunday, powered by a pair of second-half goals from rising ace Morgan Rogers.

The result boosted Villa into fourth place in the Premier League, but Rogers admitted that the game won't be remembered for its free-flowing, beautiful play.

“We knew it wasn't the game for pretty football and nice passes," Rogers told Sky Sports after the match. "It was about how hard we wanted it and how much we were determined.

“They were at us in the first half. We brought that energy in the second half. We brought that resilience. We had to dig deep at the end.”

Villa were made to work for the victory by a Leeds side who saw a potential 79th-minute goal overturned by VAR, and Rogers felt that his team did well to overcome the challenge their hosts presented.

"It was a great win at a difficult place," Rogers told BBC Radio 5 Live. "We had to dig deep and work hard and show our determination,. We deserved the win in the end.

"When you look at everyone in the room we will work as hard as we can and leave everything out there. We may not be at it as normal but sometimes heart and determination gets you over the line."
