Manchester United have a chance to pull to within four points of crosstown rivals Manchester City on Friday when the Red Devils face AFC Bournemouth to kick off Matchweek 31 of the Premier League, but they'll have to do so without a number of players recovering from injury.

However, Mason Mount is expected to be available for the encounter at the Vitality Stadium.

The midfielder has missed most of 2026 with injury, only featuring in three matches since the calendar changed. Mount has not played in the last eight Man United games, although he was an unused substitute in Sunday's 3-1 win over Aston Villa.

Given how much time he has missed for the Red Devils — essentially all of Michael Carrick's second stint as caretaker manager so far — Mount is not expected to be in the starting XI against the Cherries, but could step onto the field for the first time since mid-January.

Meanwhile, defender Noussair Mazraoui sat out of training on Wednesday due to an illness that could threaten his availability on Friday, while Lisandro Martinez was also absent.

Central defender Matthijs de Ligt and full-back Patrick Dorgu were ruled out for the trip to Bournemouth.

"It's [a] similar [situation] really [with De Ligt] and frustrating for Matta," Carrick told reporters at a pre-match press conference on Wednesday.

"He's obviously trying to work to get back but it's just the back issue, really, that's proving difficult. We'll keep working as hard as we can, to get him back as quickly as we can.

"[Martinez is] closer, a lot closer. He's getting there, so after this one. I think he'll be alright. [Dorgu] is a bit further down the line but [Mazraoui] is just ill. He just wasn't feeling too good today."
