Palmeiras and Porto begin their FIFA Club World Cup journey with an encounter at MetLife Stadium in New York New Jersey. A dominant force on the South American scene, Palmeiras won the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores in 2020 and retained it the year after to earn a place at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. The Brazilian club boast one of the most exciting young players in football in Estevao. Meanwhile, Porto earned their place in the Club World Cup via the UEFA ranking pathway. The club achieved that position on the back of some excellent showings over the course of a four-year period from 2021 to 2024 in the UEFA Champions League.
“We are not exceptional at one very specific thing, but we are good at everything. We’re good and balanced when it comes to positional, attacking football. We’re good and balanced at playing counter-attacking football, we’re good at set pieces, we’re good at boxing in our opponents and making life hard for them with our defensive structure.”
Palmeiras head coach Abel Ferreira
“Obviously, we want to play good football. We want to show the fans that we're growing and that we're playing well, but at the same time, the W is very, very important. And I think for a tournament like this, if you start winning, you get yourself in a good spot in the group, you get your confidence high as well, and it's just massively important. So yeah, for me, at this stage, obviously, the next game is always the most important. I wouldn’t exchange anything for a victory in the first game, especially against a tough opponent like Palmeiras."
Porto midfielder Stephen Eustaquio
