Sunday's super showdown could shape the destination of the Serie A title

Before a ball was even kicked in this season's Serie A, there was a strong belief that the league's title race was once again going to be a tightly contested affair.

It has now been five seasons since any of the division's championship winners have managed to retain their trophy, making Serie A one of the most open leagues in Europe and almost impossible to predict who will triumph next.

And, 2025-26 hasn't let us down. As predicted, the first half of the campaign saw a keenly fought battle at the summit of the table, with at one stage, just a single point separating the top six.

As we head into the business end, however, the usual suspects have started to pull away from the rest. Inter now have a small three-point lead at the top, with Milan close behind, clinging to their rivals' coattails.

Yet Sunday night could be the biggest evening in the title tale so far. Two games, back-to-back, featuring four of the five most likely contenders, as Juventus take on Napoli and Milan travel to Roma

The champions, and the roommates

Inter begin the weekend with a kind-looking outing at home to Pisa, the promoted side who currently reside in the bottom three. If, as expected, the Nerazzurri are victorious, they will have opened up a six-point gap on Milan before Sunday's proceedings get underway, putting huge pressure on their San Siro rivals as well as Napoli, three points further back.

The reigning champions head to Turin, clinging on to their defence, after a season ravaged by injuries. Antonio Conte hasn't yet been able to call upon Romelu Lukaku due to a pre-season setback and has also been without Kevin De Bruyne, Frank Anguissa, Billy Gilmour and Stanislav Lobotka for sustained periods.

It's left his squad stretched and unable to keep up the pace, particularly away from Naples, as well as in the Champions League, where they are struggling to even make the play-offs.

They head to Turin, knowing another defeat could almost rule them out of title contention altogether and allow Juventus to gain ground in the top four race. The good news is Napoli's recent record against Conte's former club is credible.

Earlier this season, they recorded a 2-1 win over Juventus, thanks to a Rasmus Hojlund brace and they've won seven of the last eleven meetings against the Old Lady.

Right now, they are very much the nearest challengers, but in recent weeks, it's been a slog, with a series of late goals often needed to bail the Rossoneri out of trouble in games they really should be winning if they want to be champions for the first time since 2022.

However, they have an attack full of options and very much in the goals, with Christian Pulisic and Rafael Leao starring for Max Allegri and new recruits Christopher Nkunku and Niclas Fullkrug making a vital impact.

Having already beaten Roma this season, and with three wins in their last seven visits to the Stadio Olimpico over the hosts, it's a record they need to repeat to avoid Inter running away with it at the top.

The outsiders' last chance

It was difficult to see what we'd get from both Roma and Juventus this season, with Gian Piero Gasperini starting life at a new club after his move from Atalanta and Juventus under the charge of Igor Tudor in his first full term.

That term was quickly cut short after a poor start and Luciano Spalletti took on the reins, and at times it looked like both Juve and Roma could threaten a title challenge, but they quickly faltered due to their own individual weaknesses.

For Roma, who could move above Napoli if they were to win on Sunday, they have probably exceeded some of the pre-season expectations, but will feel they've repeatedly missed chances to be ever closer to the summit.

When faced with a title rival this season, Roma have lost on each occasion, and often at a time where a win - or even a draw - could have seen a butterfly effect moment in this season's championship story.

It almost feels like a mental block, and it feels like this could be the final time to show if they are the real deal or not, but can they end Milan's unbeaten 21-game run?

Before that, Juventus will get what feels like a final chance to have their say when they host Napoli.

With a win, the Old Lady would be just a point behind their opponents and really set up a second half of the season where Inter are being hunted down by up to four different sides - just the way we wanted to see it.

Before last week's shocking defeat to Cagliari, Spalletti had led his team on a six-match unbeaten run, and it's that Juve that needs to turn up on Sunday rather than the team we've seen all too often this term, which has continued to lack a cutting edge when it mattered.

Kenan Yildiz will be key once again, but it's a regular goalscorer in attack that the side has really lacked this campaign. Either Jonathan David needs to step up, or a move into the market is needed before it's too late.

That's a matter for the transfer window; before that, it's the weekend's massive finale and an evening worthy of the name 'Super Sunday' for Serie A fans.

But will it be the evening that changes the course of the title race for the rest of 2025-26? We can't wait to find out.
