'The goal is to win the Premier League' - Ruben Amorim reacts after Manchester United's FA Cup elimination

Manchester United are out of the FA Cup after falling to Fulham in a penalty shooutout in the fifth round on Sunday.

The Red Devils fought back from a half-time deficit to force extra time, but a shootout was required after neither side could find the back of the net in the additional 30 minutes.

Both sides scored on their first three attempts, after which Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno saved the next two United spot-kicks — by Victor Lindelof and Joshua Zirkzee — while Antonee Robinson scored on his attempt, giving the Cottagers a 4-3 win in the shootout.

For United manager Ruben Amorim, the match came down to a bit of misfortune after his side created the "best chances" to win it before penalties.

"We managed to score in the second half after that [Fulham] goal near half-time," Amorim told the BBC. "It's harder for us to go and press a little bit high but we managed to do it and score.

"I think we have the best chances in the game. In the end, the penalties can go both ways and today wasn't our way."

The elimination means that United's last reasonable chance at silverware this season will come from the Europa League, which resumes this week.

However, Amorim says the Red Devils still have their eyes on a Premier League title — although the 14th place side are looking at next season and beyond to achieve that goal.

"The goal is to win the Premier League," he said. "I know that we are losing games but the goal is to win the Premier League again. I don't know how long it will take.

"We have a goal and we continue forward no matter what. It's impossible to know but you start understanding the players are better and we understand the league. We'll see in the future."
