The final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park did not fail to deliver the drama, as Everton and Liverpool battled to a 2-2 draw.
Everton, who will move into a new stadium next season, scored the first and last goals of the match to secure the draw against their visiting rivals. Beto opened the scoring for the Toffees in the 11th minute before Liverpool equalised and took the lead through Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah, respectively. It appeared as though the Reds would leave Goodison for the last time with three points in hand, but James Tarkowski struck a thunderous volley eight minutes into stoppage time to force the sides to split the points.
For Tarkowski, the match-tying goal was a bit of redemption after missing out on an earlier opportunity.
"Early on I got a chance and I panicked a bit," Tarkowski told TNT Sports. "Late on I just decided to get in the box, it dropped, I just let it go and see what happens. Amazing to score and what an amazing night.
"I just saw the ball going wide and thought 'last minute, why not'. It managed to fall to me and let it rip."
The centre-back was equally appreciative of the home fans as well as his teammates, who he said held Premier League-leading Liverpool at bay.
"Listen to this [noise from the crowd], that's amazing," Tarkowski said. "These [fans] will remember it.
"I'm just proud of my team, stuck at it, they [Liverpool] didn't create much, and we got the goal at the end."
