The 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup kicks off this month in Australia and New Zealand, and after years of preparation the players on the field will finally get to take centre stage.

Every tournament has its standout moments, whether from a brilliant individual performance from a player, a controversial call that changes a particular match, or a Cinderella run by an unfancied team. We're expecting no different from this year's competition, as players and teams put themselves on the line for a chance at ultimate glory.

Among the bigger narratives at any World Cup is the records that are set, expanded upon or erased altogether by exceptional performances.

DAZN takes a look at six of the more interesting records that could be broken at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup (records courtesy ActionNetwork.com).

Most international goals (190) - Christine Sinclair

Perhaps the most unbreakable record in the sport, longtime Canada captain Sinclair can add to her staggering tally and put it even further out of reach.

While this isn't a World Cup-specific record, Sinclair's 190 international goals — the most scored in women's or men's football — could be added to if the 40-year-old gets on the score sheet during the tournament.

Goals scored in the most World Cup tournaments (5) - Marta and Christine Sinclair

Brazilian legend Marta and Sinclair have each scored in the five most-recent Women's World Cups, establishing the record for international soccer.

If one or both of them are on target just once in the 2023 tournament, they'll extend the record to six.

Most World Cup goals scored by a single player (17) - Marta

Speaking of Marta, the 37-year-old leads every footballer (men's or women's) in World Cup goals.

Any goals scored in Australia/New Zealand will add to her current tally of 17.

Most appearances in a World Cup final (3) - Six players

This one could be broken if the United States plays to potential and gets to the final once again.

Two American players — Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe — are among the six players who have appeared in three different WC finals. If the U.S. gets back to the final and Morgan or Rapinoe (or both) step onto the field, they'll be the new record-holder(s).

Most consecutive Women's World Cup titles (2) - Germany and USA

The Americans are ranked No. 1 in the world heading into the tournament, and with good reason. They are the two-time defending WWC champions, and if they win the 2023 edition they'll be the first country to win three straight.

Fastest goal in a Women's World Cup (30 seconds) - Lena Videkull

Sweden's Videkull established this record way back in 1991 against Japan. With the 2023 tournament now at 32 teams, there are more opportunities for a player to finally best this 31-year-old record.
