A one-sided first-half performance helped Lyon beat Barcelona 3-1 to claim a record eighth UEFA Women's Champions League title in Turin.

The French side asserted their dominance from the first whistle, with their players charging forward and creating several half-chances in the first few minutes.

In the sixth minute, the early Lyon pressure paid off when Amandine Henry scored a spectacular long-range effort to put the seven-time champions ahead.

This goal shellshocked Barcelona, who throughout the first 45 minutes struggled to communicate with each other and made a number of unforced errors. It was only a matter of time until Lyon scored a second.

This eventuality came in the 23rd minute when the competition’s all-time leading goalscorer Ada Hegerberg got on the end of a perfect cross from Selma Bacha.

Then just 10 minutes later, it was 3-0 Lyon after a chaotic period of play in the Barcelona box. Hegerberg managed to get on the end of a loose ball and find Catarina Macario, who was able to calmly pass the ball into the back of Sandra Panos’ net.

Three goals down after 33 minutes, it seemed like the task was already too big for the defending champions, but they were given a lifeline by captain Alexia Putellas who volleyed home a Caroline Graham Hansen cross to make it 3-1 towards the end of the first half.

Going into the second half with a two-goal lead, it was no surprise that Lyon opted for a controlled approach, but there was a massive scare for the French side in the 56th minute.

Barcelona’s Patricia Guijarro Gutierrez spotted Lyon goalkeeper Christine Endler off her line and hit the bar with a 40-yard effort.

That was the only clear chance from the second half as Lyon showcased their experience on these occasions, whether it be well-timed substitutions or tactical fouls.

For Barcelona, Saturday’s final was a bad day at the office, Lyon looked more fired up for the game, and it showed in the way they played and fully deserved the trophy at the end of the tournament, which has seen records broken both on and off the pitch.
