'He's played his last snap'- Five destinations for outgoing San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk
It was announced Wednesday that San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will likely be looking for a new team when free agency opens in March.
49ers General Manager John Lynch came out and said "it's safe to say he's played his last snap with the Niners."
This ends his six years with the team that drafted him 25th overall in the 2020 draft, and whom he had a very successful few seasons with, racking up just under 4,000 receiving yards and 27 touchdowns in his first four seasons in the Golden City.
However, following a horrific injury seven weeks into the 2024 season, tearing his ACL and MCL, he's been out ever since and amidst rumours he was skipping rehabilitation sessions, once the 49ers decided to void the 2026 guaranteed money in his $120 million contract the writing seemed on the wall.
But which teams could do with a player of Aiyuk's quality and where is the right place for the former Second-Team All-Pro wide receiver to revitalise his career?
Las Vegas Raiders
No one would disagree that the Raiders need some form of star quality in their receiving core.
Aside from rookie running back Ashton Jeanty and tight end Brock Bowers, the Raiders offense has looked poor this season. With the first pick in this year's draft and it all but guaranteed that they'll take quarterback Fernando Mendoza, they need to give him as many weapons as possible.
If Mendoza is their guy for the future they need to invest from the start and giving him a talented wide receiver one is exactly how to do that.
Also, with the Raiders having the second most cap-space at $92,085,290 going into free agency, they'd be foolish not to look at someone like Aiyuk, and with the possibility of Maxx Crosby leaving that frees up even more cap space.
Whilst there are many problems in Las Vegas at the moment, they are building such a talented young core on offense with Bowers, Jeanty and, presumably, Mendoza. So adding in that pre-established stardom and league experience could be what they need to have an extremely dangerous offense going into the 2026 season.
Buffalo Bills
Bills fans have had an emotional week to say the least. Playoff heartbreak, again, Head Coach Sean McDermott being fired after nine years and then mere days later General Manager Brandon Beane and owner Terry Pegula laying into not only McDermott but also wide receiver Keon Coleman.
Pegula said: "The coaching staff pushed to draft Keon. I'm not saying Brandon wouldn't have drafted him, but he wasn't his next choice."
Stating this whilst Coleman is still with the team feels very harsh and only makes sense to admit if you don't plan to have him as part of your teams' future.
If Coleman is not part of the Bills plans, then they need another receiver. This core was ripped to shreds with injuries all the way into the post-season with only three available at points during their wild card game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
So is giving them a talented wide receiver, coming off the back of a horrendous injury the best suggestion.
You'd think not but Aiyuk is a step above the Bills current options and letting him partner with two-time MVP Josh Allen could be what they needed to go a step further next season and finally make it back to the Super Bowl.
Tennessee Titans
The Titans are similar to the Raiders in that they are currently in a rebuilding phase and that is very clearly starting with the offense. Cam Ward had a decent rookie year, given the team around him, putting up 3,169 yards, 15 touchdowns and only 7 interceptions.
He needs a more reliable and consistent pass catcher though. No Titans player had more than 560 receiving yards this season and only two had more than 450. The Titans need to invest in Ward after spending the first overall pick on him.
With the most cap space in the league at around $100 million, they have to be looking at the available receivers to help Ward and this Titans offense as a whole for next season.
Also, despite having the fourth overall pick in this years' draft they are projected to pick someone on the defensive side of the ball, with edge Rueben Bain being a likely target for them.
So if they're set on spending their most valuable asset on improving their defense, they have to put money into helping Ward and letting him grow and become the franchise quarterback the city of Tennessee hopes he can become.
Washington Commanders
Following the monumental post-season run in 2024, fans would've been hoping for much of the same, but mainly just further growth from Jayden Daniels as he went into his second season as the Commanders starting quarterback.
What they got instead was injuries galore, a never consistently fit Daniels and a wide receiver room that was talented if they could stay on the field.
The Commanders have the cap space for Aiyuk and would hope to re-ignite that connection he had with Daniels back at Arizona State. He would also be re-uniting with another former 49ers receiver in Deebo Samuel who was signed by Washington last offseason.
Samuel put up nearly 727 yards and six touchdowns in his first season in the nation's capital however, has shown he can hit much higher heights when at the 49ers with Aiyuk.
The idea alone of having Aiyuk, Samuel and Terry McLaurin would seem like too good an offer, and would definitely help Daniels shine again and further progress in his third year in the league.
If this did happen the Commanders would pose one of the best passing offenses on paper going into next season.
This move could give them all the offensive firepower necessary to re-take their spot atop the NFC East and look to make it back to the NFC Championship game as they did just over a year ago.
Seattle Seahawks
If Aiyuk found himself in Lumen Field, it could be a very long year for the other teams in the NFC West. Pairing Aiyuk with Offensive Player of the Year frontrunner Jaxson Smith-Njigba sounds far too enticing.
But the reality is the Seahawks have the cap space for it, at somewhere around $79,071,878, they have the money to make this move happen. If they fall short this year, whether it's this weekend or in the Superbowl, you can be sure they'll be heavily investing this offseason.
Even if they do reclaim the Lombardi trophy, for the first time since 2014, they have no reason not to build a team that can become a dynasty. Whilst Smith-Njigba has been incredible with over 1,700 receiving yards putting all the pressure on him could come back to bite them.
Their second leading receiver was Cooper Kupp with 593 yards and two touchdowns, if they could bring in Aiyuk it would give them every chance of repeating this season's success.
From Aiyuk's perspective, going somewhere that is ready to win could be better for him/
This suggests that a team like the Seahawks or the Bills would be more appealing to him currently instead of being part of a rebuild project.
