The Bears have the first and ninth overall picks in the upcoming NFL Draft.

Nobody needs to pretend to be surprised when the Chicago Bears select Caleb Williams with the first overall pick of this month’s NFL Draft.

The Bears have made little secret of their desire to draft the most highly-rated quarterback in this year’s class, which is flush with talent at that position. But the Bears also have the number nine overall pick, which is a far more interesting proposition when it comes to pre-draft predictions.

The Bears have been busy in free agency which puts them in a good position when it comes to their second selection later this month.

General manager Ryan Poles has discussed the team’s current plans, outlining how the organisation will split into separate ‘teams’ in order to get their due diligence done.

“I like the numbers in terms of the talented players that can get to nine,” Poles told the Bears’ website. “We’re going to do some cool things when we get back, kind of break into teams. One team is going to talk about [why] the tackle position is the best to go after, [why] the receiver’s the best, [why] the defensive end’s the best and use factual information to spit that out — and we’ll have a debate in terms of what’s more impactful for our football team, short-term and long-term.”

Poles also admitted that trading down is an option, if the team receives a good offer.

"For sure," he added. "That will kind of play out. We'll see what the numbers look like and that'll kind of dictate how far we can move back if we decide to do that."
