How long does an NFL game last? How long is halftime?

NFL Game Pass sale - annual pass for just £99

NFL games are known for their drama, and for those more familiar with European sports, their length. A standard matchup is listed as 60 minutes, but with timeouts, reviews, and commercial breaks, fans can expect to be watching for around three hours.

It’s all part of the rhythm that makes the sport unique. Here, DAZN News explains more about the duration of an NFL game.

How long does an NFL game last?

An NFL game is scheduled to last 60 minutes, and these 60 minutes are divided into four 15-minute quarters.

However, if both teams are tied at the end of 60 minutes during the regular season, the game is extended into overtime.

What is overtime?

If the games are tied after 60 minutes, teams then have an extra 10-minute period of play to settle their differences.

The overtime period once lasted 15 minutes, but was shortened to 10 minutes in 2017.

If, at the end of overtime, the scores remain even, the game is declared a tie. However, there are different rules for postseason games. For a more in-depth breakdown of overtime and specific rules for this particular period of the game, click here

Is there a halftime, and how long does it last?

There is a halftime during an NFL game, and this is scheduled for after the second quarter.

This lasts 12 minutes. However, during major events such as the Super Bowl, this is longer due to the halftime show.
