Patrick Mahomes will have a seasoned veteran backing him up in 2024.

The reigning Super Bowl champions have a new backup for their superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs sealed back-to-back Vince Lombardi Trophies in February when they saw off the San Francisco 49ers in Las Vegas, with Mahomes again the key player in their march to the Super Bowl.

And while Mahomes has been extremely effective in avoiding injury in recent seasons, the team have been in the market for a new backup after they let Blaine Gabbert leave through free agency this year.

Head coach Andy Reid has now turned to the former Philadelphia Eagles second overall draft pick, Carson Wentz to fill that role, signing him on a one-year deal, as per the NFL Network.

Wentz spent five years with the Eagles, earning a Super Bowl ring in 2017, although a torn ACL in Week 14 meant he watched the conclusion of that season from the sidelines.

Since leaving the Eagles at the end of the 2020 season, he has had one-year stints with the Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Rams and has a record of 47-45-1 as a starter, having thrown for more than 22,000 yards, with 153 touchdowns and 67 interceptions.

He joins a Chiefs QB room that includes Mahomes, Chris Oladokun and Ian Book.
