There were plenty of good players from the first slate of games of the day. Here are three players who stood out.
Typically, top performers surround players who have won their respective games. This case is different as a lot of hype surrounded Gabriel heading into the Cleveland Browns trip to London against the Minnesota Vikings.
Gabriel was drafted in the third round by the team but then went on to take Colorado quarterback Shadeur Sandres. When the team benched Joe Flacco, Gabriel got the nod. He didn't disappoint as he was very poised throughout and went 19 of 133 for 190 yards with two touchdown passes and a QB rating of 94.3.
He made no mistakes and kept his team in the game with a chance to win in the fourth. It was definitely a learning experience for Gabriel. Now, let's see if he can continue his momentum going forward to make a case for being the quarterback of the future for the Browns.
It was Maye's first primetime game, and you couldn't have asked for a tougher task than having to do it in front of a raucous crowd in Buffalo.
But the 2024 first-round pick out of North Carolina also showed out by going 22 of 30 for 273 and a QB rating of 103.3. Maye showed a ton of poise in the fourth quarter with the game on the line. He made big throw after big throw, especially to former Bills wide receiver Stefan Diggs, who had 10 receptions for 146 yards.
With the game tied, Maye drove the Patriots down the field with a seven-play, 37-yard drive that resulted in the game-winning 52-yard field goal from Andy Borregales to give the Pats the upset win and push their record to 3-2.
Just think, Mayfield got released by the Carolina Panthers. Now, Mayfield's found a new lease in life in Tampa and that continued on Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks and leading the Buccaneers to a 38-35 victory in the NFL's game of the day.
Mayfield went a spectacular 29 of 33 for 379 yards and two touchdown passes with a QB rating of 134.7. Down 35-28 with 3:18 remaining in the game, Mayfield marched the Bucs down the field and capped the drive off with an 11-yard touchdown throw to Sterling Shepard to tie the game.
A Lavonte David interception led to Chase McLaughlin kicking the 39-yard game-winning field goal to run the Bucs' record to 4-1 and on top of the NFC South.
