Details of the NFL’s annual performance-based pay distribution have dropped this week, with big names on either side of the league-wide $393.8million payout.
This is a program that compensates players by leveraging their playing time against salary levels in order to give additional money to those who outperform their current contracts.
Given how these payouts are calculated, it shouldn’t be a surprise that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has received one of the biggest paycheques from the NFL.
Selected with the very last pick of the 2022 draft, Purdy’s base salary last season was $985,000, with the 24-year-old leading his team to the Super Bowl, where the Niners lost to the Kansas City Chiefs.
No quarterback was handed more than the $739,795 that Purdy was paid out after the NFL revealed their list of the top 25 performance-related earners. New York Jets guard John Simpson topped the list with a payout of almost $975,000.
The other end of the quarterback scale shouldn’t be too much of a shock, either.
Aaron Rodgers’ debut season with the New York Jets lasted just four snaps before the former Green Bay Packer ruptured his Achilles tendon and as a result, he would receive just $81.14 from the league-wide pool, as per Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Given Rodgers signed a three-year, $112.5million deal with the Jets last year that includes $75million in guaranteed money, he is unlikely to feel too hard done by.
Purdy, meanwhile, will be eligible for a contract extension next year, ahead of the 2025 season and is likely to receive a huge contract.
