Smith welcomes the talented Cuban to his home city, and he is fully aware that victory could be the platform for a major showdown with Dmitry Bivol or a rematch with Artur Beterbiev.
A former world champion at super-middleweight, Smith is no stranger to participating in boxing's marquee fights after already sharing the ring with Canelo Alvarez and Beterbeiev.
Last year, Smith displayed his credentials at 175lbs when he produced a brilliant performance to outwork Joshua Buatsi in Saudi Arabia in a thrilling battle that was one of the best fights of 2025.
Now Smith must overcome the threat posed by Morrell, and if he can record another win, he is aiming high when targeting his next fight after Morrell, despite recognising that his next opponent is also a top operator.
“I believe Morrell is one of those fighters,” said Smith when speaking to Seconds Out.
“He’s a really good fighter, but I believe I beat him, and then I look for the next challenge.”
“The way the rankings are looking, the only people ranked above him is myself and then the champions Bivol and Beterbiev. So that’s who I’ll be looking for next.”
