Former WBA middleweight champion George Groves has suggested that his former rival Chris Eubank Jr should seriously contemplate retirement instead of a Conor Benn rematch.
Eubank Jr got arguably the biggest win of his career in April when he beat Conor Benn in a thrilling 12-round battle.
Following this thrilling affair, there were calls for a rematch with rumours of a possible date in September, but there is also a chance Eubank Jr may finally get his long awaited shot against two-time undisputed super middleweight champion Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez.
However, in an interview with Lottoland Boxing Betting, Groves stated that fans should not be surprised if Eubank Jr walks away from boxing and ends his career on a high.
"Don’t rule retirement out. He’s had the biggest win of his career, not against his toughest opponent, but in terms of significance. He beat a rival, in a stadium, under huge pressure," Groves said.
“He dropped to his knees at the end, praising the Lord, like he wasn’t sure he was going to win, like everything was against him. It was like a Hollywood script, and he came out on top.”
“But if I were him, I’d seriously consider walking away now. Make that payday last and leave on your terms. But he won’t.
“People will think I’m mad for saying that, but there’s more to life than boxing. I retired at 30. Took me four attempts to win a world title. I won one. Nearly killed someone in the process. Fought in a tournament. Had big fights, big wins. Lost in the end, and said, “Right, that’s me done.”
“It’s hard to walk away when there’s still something being served at the table, but sometimes you have to.”
Despite losing to Eubank Jr, at the age of 28, there is still plenty left in Benn's boxing career.
One possible future opponent could be Ryan Garcia after 'The Destroyer' travelled to New York be ringside for the former's loss to Rolando Romero at the Ring Magazine's historic Times Square event last month.
