Who is the king of Mexican boxing: David Benavidez or Canelo Alvarez?
Right now, the crown belongs to Benavidez (32-0, 26 KOs), who ran roughshod over Zurdo Ramirez on Saturday night to capture the WBA/WBO cruiserweight titles on DAZN PPV. The victory was historic because Benavidez became the first fighter to win titles at super middleweight, light heavyweight and cruiserweight.Â
One of the key questions coming out of this performance is what's next for "The Mexican Monster"? A name that came out of Benavidez's mouth first was his old rival Canelo Alvarez.
"I just want to give the fans the names they want to see," Benavidez told Gray. "I seen Canelo in the building. "Let me just ask the fans this: Do you guys want to see Canelo vs. David Benavidez?"
The crowd inside Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena erupted in approval.
"Enough said," Benavidez said with a subtle message to Alvarez. "That means we can't leave that fight on the table. I respect Canelo. He's a great champion. But I'm a great champion too. Let's do it."
Gray asked Benavidez if the fight is actually realistic to happen sometime in the near future. Benavidez didn't seem too optimistic.
"I don't know," Benavidez said. "I'm still a champion at 175. I'm a champion at 200 and 175. So if they want it, come get it at 175. Let's get it at 175."
Alvarez was in the building in support of Jaime Munguia, who dominated Armendo Resendiz to win the WBA super middleweight title. The four-division world champion didn't stay to watch Benavidez's performance.
He will return to action in September to face WBC super middleweight champion Christian Mbilli. It will be the first time Alvarez returns to action since losing all four 168-pound belts to Terence Crawford last September.Â
