David Benavidez is the only fight who could beat Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, believes coach Robert Garcia.
Alvarez will next fight in November as he attempts to become the undisputed super middleweight champion. He already holds the WBA, WBC and WBO belts, and is coming up against IBF champ Caleb Plant after extensive negotiations delayed a fight that had been expected in September.
The Mexican is the heavy favourite after winning each of his 14 match-ups since his 2013 defeat to Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Alvarez is often talked of as the current pound-for-pound fighter, but Garcia thinks there is one man who could pose a test.
Benavidez is a former WBC champion at 168lbs, and speaking to Fight Hub TV, Garcia suggested that he might have the style to trouble the Mexican.
“I don’t think there is anyone right now who can handle Canelo [Alvarez]“, Garcia said.
“I feel that the only one that could cause him problems, and at some point beat him is [David] Benavidez.”
“[Benavidez] is a very tall fighter, very brave and he is not afraid to go forward.
“I think it could bring a lot of trouble to someone like Canelo. I still believe that Canelo would win, but it could give him some headaches.”
