MANCHESTER, England - Delicious Orie's professional career is up and running after he beat Milo Veletic on Saturday, but the Briton's win came without expected fireworks.
At Thursday’s press conference, the former Olympian stated that he wanted to show spite, and was offensive from the opening bell at Manchester's Co-op Live.
On the front foot and backing up Veletic, Orie got the jab going and crashed a right hand into his opponent’s skull.
Veletic was served up as prey to the former Paris 2024 Olympian who prowled around the ring and looking for the opportune moment to strike.
Orie made no secret about adjusting to the differences between amateur and professional codes, and many were eager to see what would happen if he did let his hands go.
The star was subsequently was more active in the second with the overhand right the main weapon in the second.
In the third, Orie’s right hand continued to crash into Veletic but his coach Grant Smith was calling for combinations. “One-two, one-two,” bellowed Smith and while Orie would respond to these instructions, he reverted back to the odd shot, allowing Veletic to recover and stay standing.
The fourth and final round saw Orie come out with some impetus amid calls from Smith to let his hands go. A combination finishing off with a left hand landed. A right swing missed Veletic as he went on to the ropes and was later followed by left-right which stunned the Bosnian, but Orie failed to capitalise and finish the bout early.
Orie was announced as the winner, but compared to Team GB teammate Pat Brown’s professional debut last week, this was a debut which lacked the expected fireworks.
It's vital that Orie is kept active to give him the confidence needed to tee-off on his foes if he is to make an impact in boxing’s glamour division.
