Dillian Whyte out of Joe Joyce bout through injury, with replacement to be named
Dillian Whyte's hopes of a triumphant homecoming are in tatters after the heavyweight veteran was forced to withdraw from his bout with Joe Joyce through injury.
News broke on Tuesday that the Jamaican-British fighter had pulled out of his headline encounter with the former Rio 2016 medalist in April at Manchester's Co-op Live.
Joyce is still set to headline the bill, the first of promoter Queensberry Promotions' groundbreaking deal with DAZN, and featuring a stacked slate of talent.
But for Whyte, who has fought just twice since the start of 2023, it is a cruel blow as he seeks to re-establish himself as a legitimate top-tier contender in the heavyweight division.
"Due to a hand injury sustained during training camp, Dillian Whyte will no longer be able to compete in his scheduled bout on 5th April against Joe Joyce," Queensberry said.
"A replacement opponent is now being finalised for The Juggernaut and an announcement regarding this will be made shortly."
Whyte last fought in December, when he defeated Ebenezer Tetteh after a seventh-round retirement in what was his first fight for nine months.
Joyce meanwhile had been due to face Patrick Korte on March 1 in Bournemouth, but withdrew at short notice himself.
