Julian Quinones was the hero for Mexico as they got the 2026 World Cup underway with a dominant performance over South Africa in the impressive Azteca Stadium with a 2-0 win.
The Al Qadsiah forward was in impressive form throughout the game as South Africa failed to stop him scoring the opening goal before he continued to have a big say on the match as a constant nuisance in attack.
With Raul Jiminez adding a second, Mexico were comfortable throughout the match, but the main talking point regarding the football was the performance of referee, Wilton Sampaio, who gave out three red cards with Mexico receiving one.
With several high-profile attendees watching the action unfold, one popular figure was Canelo Alvarez with the legendary fighter receiving warm applause whenever his image was shown on the big screen.
The multi-weight world champion has faced some of boxing’s biggest names including Floyd Mayweather, Miguel Cotto, and Terence Crawford, and the smile on his face when Jiminez increased Mexico’s advantage demonstrated just how much his country’s win meant to him.
Before that, the 35-year-old appears to be giving all his backing to the Mexican football team, and he couldn’t hide his delight when handing Quinones the player of the match award after the game was over.
Canelo has just under three months to wait for his next battle, but for Mexico, the big games keep coming and they will welcome South Korea on June 18.
