Gabriela Fundora can be a multi-weight world champion by the year's end

Gabriela Fundora returns to action Saturday night when she will look to defend her undisputed flyweight world championship against Viviana Ruiz Corredor at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, and live on DAZN.

‘Sweet Poison’ already defended her undisputed crown twice in 2025 and a win this weekend would spell her third defense of the titles in perhaps a greater signal to challenge herself further by subsequently moving up in weight or even down. Either way, the 23-year-old sensation has the tools to become a multi-weight world champion by the year’s end … if that’s what she wants to do.

Oscar De La Hoya, her promoter at Golden Boy, spoke about this with DAZN’s Chris Mannix after Fundora produced a seventh-round TKO of Alexas Kubicki in September.

“Well, look, I think for a fighter, it’s easier to go up obviously than to go down,” De La Hoya told Mannix at the time. “But then again … if she goes up, she’s gonna face a lot of tough fighters who hit harder, who can take the punch, and who can give it. So, I don’t know.”

That brought him to the alternative — Fundora  moving down in weight.

“She might go down, depending on who wants to fight her because it’s very tough to get opponents for her. It’s very difficult because of how tall [5-foot-9] and lanky she is and how hard she hits. But I feel that if she goes up in weight, I think she can challenge herself and be a [two-division] world champion.”

I said in my New Year’s Resolutions for Boxing that in order for Fundora to grow her star power, she must expand her reach across divisions. Both north and south of her 112-pound queendom awaits enticing matchups.

A six-pound gain in weight could have her challenging for Cherneka Johnson’s undisputed bantamweight world championship. Ten pounds up and she could vie for Ellie Scotney’s three unified junior featherweight titles.

Looking just south at 108 pounds, Fundora could contest for Evelyn Bermudez’ three unified junior flyweight titles or Lourdes Juarez’ WBC strap. A dip even further to strawweight could have Fundora clash with WBC titleholder Yokasta Valle if ‘Sweet Poison’ feels so inclined.

At 5-foot-9, Fundora is tall and wiry like her brother and WBC super welterweight world champion, Sebastian Fundora. Also like her brother, Fundora has the ability to pick opponents apart from the outside and punish them with a mean inside game. She checks every box as evidenced by her unblemished 17-0 record, which includes nine knockouts.

Another convincing win Saturday night, and Fundora might need to make a move — either up or down — to test her skills outside of this dominant zone.

This bout would be early enough into 2026 where she could be a multi-weight world champion by the year’s end.

Now, it’s up to ‘Sweet Poison’ to traverse across territories.
