Garner overcomes Magnesi in one of the best fights of 2026 that lights up Southampton
Ryan Garner brought some much-needed sporting joy to Southampton as he claimed the WBC interim title at super-featherweight with a hard-fought points win over Italy’s Michael Magnesi in an unforgettable encounter that was thrilling from the opening bell.
Garner was fighting at the home of his beloved Southampton FC, and he delighted the large crowd at St Mary’s stadium who were desperate to see the fighting hero emerge victorious.
Last month, the city was rocked when Southampton were expelled from the championship play-offs after being found guilty of spying on their opponents. The news hit the region hard, but Garner was eager to give them something to smile about.

Desperate to make an impact on the world scene after several impressive displays domestically, Garner proved he was ready for the biggest test in his weight class by putting on an impressive performance against his durable opponent.
Both fighters came out flying and neither was willing to take a backwards step as they exchanged big shots up close.
A big left hook from Magnesi in round two got Garner’s attention, but despite the visitor having small successes, Garner always seemed to be that little bit ahead.
The fight kept a similar pattern with Garner always dominating the exchanges and he looked like he might force a stoppage in round nine after forcing Magnesi to step back.
Despite enduring that onslaught, Magnesi would hear the final bell, and he maintained his intensity in the closing stages as he tried everything to close the gap on Garner.
At the end of 12 terrific rounds, Garner was handed the verdict with scores of 116-112, 118-110, and 119-109, but more importantly, he picked up crucial experience that will help him prepare for even bigger fights moving forward.
