Kenneth Sims Jr. finally getting the fight he's been waiting years for against Arnold Barboza Jr.
Far too often, fighters don't get the opponents they truly desire.
Lennox Lewis never got Riddick Bowe. Amir Khan never got Floyd Mayweather Jr. And David Benavidez will unlikely be able to lure Canelo Alvarez into the ring for any amount of money.
But for Kenneth Sims Jr., after five years of chasing, he'll finally get Arnold Barboza Jr. into the ring on Saturday from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., in the welterweight headliner that can be watched live and exclusively on DAZN.
Sims (22-3-1, 8 KOs) has been chasing Barboza around the junior welterweight division because he understands what the former interim WBO champion brings to the table. He might have had to chase Barboza up to 147 pounds, but Sims is coming to take what his opponent already has.
"I’m competitive," Sims said at Thursday's press conference. "I wouldn’t want to fight him if I didn’t respect him. I don’t want to waste my time. I want to fight a good fighter. He’s been ranked in the top 10 for years. That’s why I’ve been chasing this fight for so long, because I want that spot.
"I got offered it (Barboza fight), and this is my chance. And it’s happening now. He’s a fighter. I’m ready though. I’m ready to take it."
Back in May, Barboza (32-1, 11 KOs) suffered the first loss to former two-division champion Teofimo Lopez by unanimous decision. Sims understands the significance of this main event tilt and what a victory does for his career moving forward.
"It helps my career extremely because he’s been in big moments," Sims said. "He’s fought good fighters. Me going in there and taking care of him and winning in dominant fashion will show that."
