Keys to Victory: Where will Murat Gassiev vs. Peter Kadiru be won and lost?

Oleksandr Usyk recently vacating his unified heavyweight world titles threw the division up in the air. However, Murat Gassiev has some stake in being the WBA ‘Regular’ world champion.

The Russian fighter puts his title on the line tonight against Peter Kadiru in Moscow, and live on DAZN.

Gassiev (33-2, 26 KOs) won the title in December via a sixth-round knockout of Kubrat Pulev and is riding a streak of three straight stoppage wins, having rebounded from a stinging split-decision loss to Otto Wallin in September 2023.

To record his first title defense, Gassiev will have to defeat Kadiru (23-1, 13 KOs) who already fought twice in 2026, having produced a pair of unanimous decisions in his native Germany — defeating Mauricio Nicolas Barragan in March and Senad Gashi in May.

Watch Murat Gassiev work and a steady buffet of body shots are a staple of his in-ring servings. The WBA ‘Regular’ heavyweight champ offers these weapons as stabs to the body, halting opponents’ momentum, or by also loading up with hooks that he effectively leverages. Both variations should help debilitate a 6’4½” Peter Kadiru in the midsection.

Catch and shoot in the pocket

Gassiev uses the catch and shoot well, absorbing punches with his gloves only to return sharp counterpunches the other way. Doing this against Kadiru will be of high value for the champ, who tends to patiently sit in the pocket looking for the optimal time to strike. Kadiru sometimes telegraphs his long, looping hooks, which should empower Gassiev’s catch-and-shoot tactics even more.

Burst through the guard with the left

Any time Gassiev recognizes that Kadiru is overextending on his shots, the Russian fighter must use these sequences to burst through the guard. Orthodox, Gassiev possesses a blunt left hook — just ask Kubrat Pulev. Gassiev perfectly read a lax Pulev in the pocket and burst through the guard with a devastating, compact left hook that crumpled the Bulgarian. Gassiev can do the same against Kadiru if he detonates the hook with timing.

A stab jab to the body is already part of Peter Kadiru’s in-ring repertoire as he does a solid job of dipping his 6’4½” frame to the mush opponents’ midsections and drive them back. The strategy should be deployed to throw Gassiev’s rhythm off, forcing the champ to reset his offense each time.

Loop a hook around Gassiev’s guard

As aforementioned, Kadiru sometimes telegraphs his shots, especially with those looping hooks around opponents’ guards. Kadiru would be better aided by turning his jab into a hook — something he does smoother as it’s more in the motion of his ring work. So, once that jab connects flush, Kadiru ought to try his chances at wrapping a left hook around Gassiev’s guard.

Don’t get caught overextending

Just like the hook can be a weapon for Kadiru, it can be a liability if the German heavyweight overextends with the shot. He does the latter, and Gassiev will be there in the pocket to pounce with a shrewd counterpunch that could alter the fight, or end it altogether. Therefore, it’s imperative that Kadiru doesn’t get caught overcommitting with his hooks.

In having these fights, Gassiev has accrued ring savvy and generalship which I expect him to fully put on display to have his hand raised via points victory against Peter Kadiru. A stoppage could be there for the taking if Gassiev delivers with timing.
