Kiko Martinez wants Leigh Wood fight despite earning Josh Warrington rematch

Kiko Martinez is now a five-time European champion after defeating Jordan Gill in a comprehensive victory on Saturday night.

After the fight he called for a match-up against Leigh Wood, despite earning himself a shot at IBF champion Josh Warrington.

Warrington had beaten the 36-year-old Spaniard in February to regain the title, perhaps explaining why Martinez is looking elsewhere for another fight.

The veteran defeated Gill with a comprehensive stoppage after knocking Gill to the canvas four times over the course of the fight.

Gill was cut in round two and could only manage another two rounds after the referee waved off the fight in the fourth.

In the third round he was sent to the floor off the ropes, and then again in the last moments before the bell. Gill attempted to fight back, but in the fourth session, a right-hander sent him back to the ground, and seconds later, a left-hook finished off the tie.

While Gill could get back to his feet, the referee was unconvinced by his ability to put up a defence any further.

Instead of pursuing IBF featherweight titlist Warrington for a trilogy fight, he instead proposed the WBA champion after the fight, saying: “I want to fight Leigh Wood!’
