Knockout CP Freshmart, whose actual name is Thammanoon Niyomtrong, is back in action on Wednesday when he defends his WBA minimumweight title against Wanheng Menayothin.
But why does the WBA minimumweight champion use a Thailand convenience store for his ring name?
DAZN explains all below.
For Thai boxers, the ring surname can often be the name of their gym or a sponsor.
In the case of Thammanoon Niyomtrong, CP Freshmart is a chain of frozen food grocery stores owned by Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group who sponsors Niyomtrong.
In addition for this particular ring name being used to give expsoure to gyms and sponors, a name such as Knockout CP Freshmart is used to because it sounds better than the boxer's actual name and is easier for fans to remember.
