Teofimo Lopez knows what it takes to feature on boxing’s pound-for-pound list, but who does he consider the sport’s best fighter at the moment?
Earlier this year, Lopez dropped off the chart after he was widely outpointed by Shakur Stevenson in a huge fight in New York City.
Ahead of that fight, Lopez had featured in several high-profile bouts and had scored some impressive wins over major names such as Vasiliy Lomachenko and Josh Taylor.
After losing to Stevenson, it was unclear what direction Lopez would head in, but the big fights keep coming for the popular Brooklyn man as he will now step up to welterweight to face Rolly Romero in August.
Victory there will provide Lopez with a world title in a third weight class, and it will help him get closer to boxing’s elite once more.
With the business end of the pound-for-pound list heating up with big stars like Stevenson, Oleksandr Usyk, and Naoya Inoue, Lopez thinks the latter's win over Junto Nakatani in May gives him the edge.
“They started very slow in the beginning, they were feeling each other out, but overall, as the rounds kept going, I think that Inoue closed it out in the championship rounds, like a champ does,” said Lopez on Inside the Ring.
“The amount of title defences that he has and the amount of everything that he has done, I think that he is number one pound-for-pound, in my opinion.”
