Matchroom Boxing has announced Pat McCormack’s clash with Mexico’s Miguel Parra this weekend will now be an eliminator for the WBA welterweight title.

Olympic silver medallist McCormack, 7-0 (5), is set to top the bill in his hometown of Sunderland live on DAZN, and the stakes have been upped for the fight.

A victory over Parra, 25-5-1 (17), would put him on the brink of a world title shot, despite McCormack currently being ranked eighth by the WBA, four spots above Parra.

The WBA belt is in the possession of Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, who pulled off one of the shocks of the year to beat Ryan Garcia in May.

He was subsequently upgraded to full champion by the WBA after Jaron Ennis relinquished his title to move up to super welterweight.

Romero has been linked with a potential clash against Manny Pacquiao later this year after the Filipino legend returned from a four-year layoff to draw with WBC champion Mario Barrios in July.

If that fight goes ahead, McCormack could be in line to fight the winner, should he get past Parra.

McCormack has made swift progress since turning professional after winning a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics four years ago.

Working under the watchful eye of trainer Ben Davison, who also coaches Anthony Joshua, McCormack has worked his way into title contention and is now closing in on the world scene.

McCormack picked up a career-best win last time out against Robbie Davies Jr and will be looking to steal the show again in front of his adoring fans in Sunderland.

His twin brother, Luke, is also highly rated and has won all four of his professional bouts.

Luke joined Pat at the delayed Tokyo Olympics but was knocked out in the round of 16 by eventual gold medallist Andy Cruz.
