Boxing fans were shocked last week when it was confirmed that Canelo Alvarez would defend his undisputed status at super-middleweight against 154lbs ruler, Jermell Charlo.

It was expected that Canelo would be back in action in September against Jermall Charlo, but the Mexican will instead face his brother who will be stepping up two weight classes.

Shawn Porter, a shrewd analyst of the sport and a former world champion at welterweight, is giving his backing to Canelo with the fight just over two months away on September 30.

The 168lbs champion has shown some glimpses of vulnerability in recent fights but Porter still expects him to come through when the pair clash later this year.

“When you look at experience, when you look at the face that Canelo has been multi-dimensional throughout his career, you look at the fact that he has the work rate,” said Porter when speaking to Boxing Social.

“We’re looking at a right hand from Jermell Charlo, and if that right hand doesn’t land between rounds one and eight it probably won’t land at all, and Canelo will win this fight.

“I don’t see him losing to Charlo.”
