Two-division world title winner Danny Garcia is back in the ring tonight, after 19 months away. Making his debut at junior middleweight, he takes on Jose Benavidez Jr. from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Garcia is a former unified junior welterweight champion and WBC welterweight belt holder, and last fought in December 2020 when he lost to unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. at 147lbs. A new division for Garcia gives him a fresh start, and he now takes on the brother of two-time super middleweight champion David Benavdiez.
Benavidez is also a former welterweight title challenger, losing to WBO champion Terence Crawford by 12th-round stoppage. He's fought just once since then, going to a majority draw with Francisco Emanuel Torres in his 154-pound debut.
For Garcia, Benavidez is meant to be little more than a tune-up fight ahead of getting a chance at a championship fight. Can Benavidez upset the plans?
