Who is John Ryder? Background, record, championships, biggest wins of Canelo Alvarez's next opponentDAZN

John Ryder is set for the biggest fight of his career when he takes on Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez for the undisputed super middleweight title on May 6.

This is already a tough test for Ryder who will be facing one of the world's best pound-for-pound fighters, but the task is even greater with the fact that Ryder will have to travel to Mexico in an attempt to become the king at 168lbs.

Ryder will be considered a huge underdog for this matchup, but with a career which has experienced a recent resurgence, 'The Gorilla' is expected to give it everything he's got in front of a sold out crowd at the Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.

DAZN takes a look at the career of Ryder ahead of his date with destiny.

What is John Ryder's professional record?

John Ryder boasts a 32-5 record in the professional ranks with 18 of those wins coming by way of knockout.

Championships

John Ryder has challenged for a world title when he took on Callum Smith in November 2019 for the WBA super middleweight title.

This was a contest which Ryder lost on points, despite some believing that he did enough to beat the defending champion.

When the experienced Daniel Jacobs arrived in London to take on John Ryder, it was clear that it was a must-win for both men if they wanted any hope of getting a world title shot.

However, things did not to go to plan for Ryder with Jacobs seizing control of the fight despite not throwing any meaningful shots.

Ryder finally began to hurt his opponent in the seventh, while Jacobs retreated into his shell and did not show the assertive style which gave him any early foothold.

The closely fought contest went to the judges' scorecards and it was Ryder who was given the victory via a split decision, proving that 'The Gorilla' was able to share the ring with some of the super middleweight division's biggest names.
