Elfyn Evans says his impressive start to the 2025 World Rally Championship won’t change his approach as the series heads to the Canary Islands for the first time this week.
The four-time WRC title runner-up has made a record-breaking start to the 2025 season that has resulted in the Welshman amassing a 36-point lead over his nearest rival Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville. The points margin is the largest held by a driver at this point of the season in WRC history.
Evans heads into the asphalt round on the Spanish islands having won back-to back WRC rounds in Sweden and Kenya after beginning the year finishing second in Monte Carlo, behind Toyota team-mate Sebastien Ogier, who returns to action this weekend.
“We’ve had a good run of rallies to start the season, but it changes nothing really for me in terms of approach: we just want to go and have a good rally and achieve the best result possible,” said Evans.
Evans is, however, already relishing the prospect of tackling what will be an all-new event in the Canary Islands.
The Toyota driver joined rival Neuville at the opening round of the European Rally Championship held on Spanish asphalt roads at Rally Sierra Morena earlier this month to log valuable miles to prepare for the Canary Islands.
Sitting atop the championship standings means Evans will be the first Rally1 driver to experience the Canary Islands stages, but he isn’t expecting road position to play much of a factor.
“In terms of character, we can expect the stages to be generally very clean and quite twisty,” he added.
“The majority of asphalt rallies we’ve had in the championship over recent years have been more on the dirtier side and we’ve missed the variety of a proper racing-style rally like this.
“With very little cutting, road position shouldn’t have a huge bearing, so I don’t think it will be much of an advantage to be running first if at all; I suspect it should be similar conditions for everybody and a fair fight.”
The fourth round of the WRC season will begin with shakedown on Thursday, before the first of 18 stages on Friday morning.
