Late goal not enough: Relive Atletico Madrid's inadequate victory over Botafogo
Atletico Madrid needed at least three goals from their game against Botafogo on Monday in order to move on to the round of 16 at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
They only scored one.
And it was a late one at that, as the Spanish side were woefully ineffectual despite knowing the paramaters by which they could advance, as Botafogo were the more threatening of the two sides on the balance of the game despite losing 1-0.
The result means Atleti are the first big European team to be eliminated from the summer tournament, while Botafogo join PSG as the two Group B sides in the last 16.
