Cameroon international is currently at AFCON.

Mark Lawrenson doesn't think Manchester United will miss Andre Onana while he's away with Cameroon at the African Nations Cup.

The United number one will be missing for the next few weeks whilst competing in the Ivory Coast, with Turkish goalie Altay Bayindir set to deputise for Erik ten Hag's side.

Onana arrived at Old Trafford in a £43 million deal last summer but has come under fire for several high-profile mistakes as United struggled for form this season. So much so, that Lawrenson - who was a five-time league title winner for United's rivals Liverpool - believes that the Camerronian won't be missed during his international absence.

“Altay Bayindir can’t be any worse than André Onana!" Lawrenson told Paddy Power.

"The number of mistakes that Onana has made, Manchester United won’t be any worse off if he heads to AFCON. Sometimes you have to throw someone in – this is his chance. Hopefully, he’ll get some protection, which Onana has never had, but he’s been poor anyway."

Onana has conceded 27 goals in the Premier League already this season and was blamed for some notable errors in United's disappointing Champions League campaign, leading Lawrenson unimpressed with his start in a United shirt.

Adding: "He’s a 5/10 for his performances so far, and it can be difficult coming into a new club, but I don’t see how they can do any worse than that – unless they give David de Gea a phone call to come back for a few games. Stranger things have happened!”
