Arsenal’s home clash with Bayern Munich on Wednesday night is undoubtedly the tie of the round in Matchday 5 of this season’s Champions League .

The Gunners and their aristocratic German visitors both go into the game with a 100% winning record, a sequence matched only by Inter Milan after four rounds of action.

The eagerly-anticipated showdown at the Emirates will be an occasion to savour as Mikel Arteta’s men bid to down the Bundesliga champions and six-time European Cup winners.

DAZN News  picks out five key battles which could decide the outcome of a game between two of the competition's favourites.

William Saliba vs Harry Kane

Saliba’s partnership with Brazil defender Gabriel has been one of the best defensive pairings in the Premier League for several seasons.

It has also played a major role in Arsenal’s superb start to the current campaign, but coming up against Kane will be the acid test.

Saliba could well be tasked with foiling the England captain, who has enjoyed an incredible 2025-26 season to date.

The former Tottenham star, who is on course to hit 30 goals before Christmas, would love nothing more than to find the net against the old enemy.

Kane has scored 15 goals in 21 appearances against Arsenal in all competitions and notched for Bayern at the Emirates in the first leg of their quarter-final tie in the 2023/24 Champions League.

Declan Rice vs Joshua Kimmich

Rice signed for Arsenal from West Ham for £105m in 2023 and at times that fee has looked an absolute snip.

The England midfielder has consistently proved he can mix it with the best players in the world, for club and country, and he will relish his clash with Kimmich.

Germany captain Kimmich, 30, is a class act on the right flank or the centre of midfield and he could be tasked with containing Rice, who has developed into a box-to-box schemer under Arteta.

Keep an eye on both men in what could be a fascinating contest between two of Europe’s finest midfielders.

Eberechi Eze vs Michael Olise

This particular clash might be more to do with who can shine the brightest.

Both are masters of their craft, blessed with the skill to unlock the best defences and supply their team-mates with the bullets to fire or score themselves.

The pair spent time playing together at Crystal Palace before moving on to bigger and better things.

Eze has impressed since joining Arsenal from the Eagles during the summer, while 23-year-old Olise is in his second season at Bayern after moving from Selhurst Park.

Two wonderfully gifted players, this is a match-up laced with intrigue.

Bukayo Saka vs Josip Stanisic

Saka has proved unstoppable at times this season, scoring a hatful of goals to help Arsenal emerge as Premier League title favourites and make serious progress in the Champions League.

He has a penchant for cutting in from the right flank and finding the net with his wand of a left foot – Saka has scored against Olympiakos and Slavia Prague in the Champions League this season.

Standing in the England winger’s way, however, will be Bayern defender Stanisic.

Although the Croatia international can also play centre-back and right-back, he has filled in expertly at left-back this season.

Bayern boss Vincent Kompany may well be tempted to keep him there in a bid to thwart Saka’s threat.

Viktor Gyokeres v Dayot Upamecano

Gyokeres has produced the goods in fit and starts this season following his summer arrival from Sporting Club for a cool £64million.

But he did score twice in the 4-0 demolition of Atletico Madrid in Matchday 3 of this season’s Champions League.

If passed fit, the Sweden striker will face a stern test against France defender Upamecano.

He is one of the best centre-backs in Europe, so it should be some scrap.
