Mikel Arteta says Arsenal lacked 'magic moments' in draw with Liverpool

Arsenal and Liverpool each walked away with a point after Thursday's 0-0 draw at Emirates Stadium, with Mikel Arteta left to lament the absence of a game-changing moment from his side.

The Gunners have built up a six-point lead atop the Premier League standings but they squandered a prime opportunity to widen the gap on challengers Manchester City and Aston Villa, who both drew their respective matches on Wednesday.

A victory for Arsenal on Thursday — which would have been their sixth in a row — would have seen Arteta's men go eight points clear of their nearest rivals for the title, but the North Londoners were forced to settle for the draw against a combative Liverpool team who controlled much of the match.

"We know that the margins are very small. I think we have two different halves," Arteta told Sky Sports after the final whistle.

"The first one, where we have a lot of domination, created big situations with players almost inside the six-yard box to pick a player up, and we didn't find the right pass to score the goal. And the second half was a bit more of a struggle.

"This game needs some magic moments, and at Anfield [in the reverse fixture], [Dominik] Szoboszlai did it, and they won the game, and today it didn't happen, but you cannot win it, you cannot lose it.

"We have some moments where we have the right positional advantages to really hurt them, and then when we got into these areas, we lacked quality to pick the players."

While Thursday's draw left Arsenal feeling disappointed, especially as they dropped points at home for just the second time this season, Arteta looked at the bigger picture and gave his side a passing grade after a hectic period in which the Gunners played six matches in less than four weeks; winning five and drawing one.

"We've come from a very demanding schedule," the Arsenal manager said. "The last six games that we've played in this Christmas period, and we've come out of that in a really strong position."
